Most apartments here are in old block buildings, usually without elevators and with plumbing that has seen better days. Living with roommates is the absolute standard, and there's a huge culture of passing down apartments, leases, and furniture by word of mouth. While prices are still reasonable compared to other major cities, they've spiked in recent years, and competition for the truly good apartments—the ones renovated by investors—can be fierce. If you choose to move further out to newer, more spacious family neighborhoods like Ramot or Neve Ze'ev, you'll get modern housing, but you'll pay the price of being disconnected from the student bubble.

On a day-to-day basis, if you live in the university neighborhoods, your commute will be almost entirely on foot or by bike (just make sure to lock it well and take the battery inside—bike theft is a known issue). It's incredibly easy to go a whole semester without ever leaving the neighborhood radius. The "North/University" train station is right on campus, serving as a perfect lifeline for heading home on weekends. The compromises in Be'er Sheva require some adjustment: the desert climate means scorching summers and freezing winter nights, occasional dust storms, and the aging infrastructure in older neighborhoods can be frustrating. But for most students, the community, having friends just a two-minute walk away, and the feeling that everyone is in the same boat more than make up for any peeling paint in the stairwell.
