Ramat Gan sits right on Tel Aviv's eastern edge, close enough that from some streets you can walk across the border without realizing it, but it has its own character. You've got the Diamond Exchange district with its cluster of skyscrapers that shapes the skyline, a working business center built around it, and then long stretches of calmer, leafier residential streets once you move away from the towers. The mix of people is broader than Tel Aviv's: young professionals priced out of TA, families wanting more space, students (Bar-Ilan University is here), and plenty of longtime residents who've been in the same building for decades. It feels like a real city in its own right, just with a little less ego than its neighbor.
On rent, Ramat Gan used to be the obvious "just across the line, much cheaper" move. That's less true than it was. Prices have been climbing steadily as more people give up on Tel Aviv itself, and the gap keeps narrowing, especially in the areas closest to the border. You'll still usually get more space for your money than in TA, and the market feels a bit less frantic, though desirable apartments still go quickly. The building stock is genuinely mixed — a lot of older blocks from the 60s and 70s (some being torn down and rebuilt under urban renewal programs), alongside shiny new towers, especially around Bursa and the main arteries. Renovated older apartments are often the sweet spot.
For commuting you're in good shape: the light rail runs straight through the city and drops you into central Tel Aviv without needing a car, and buses are plentiful. The main tradeoff is that some parts of Ramat Gan — especially around the Ayalon highway and the Diamond Exchange — are noisy and traffic-heavy, while others, further east up the hill or around the national park, are surprisingly quiet and green. It's a solid fit if you want to work or play in Tel Aviv but come home to something that doesn't feel like a permanent party, and it's become a go-to for couples and small families who want city life without Tel Aviv prices.
